MID SUMMER BUTTERFLY HOLIDAY IN BULGARIA
BUTTERFLIES OF THE BULGARIAN MOUNTAINS

Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: From the Bulgarian capital Sofia, we transfer south to the Rilska Reka valley in the heart of the Rila Mountains where we will spend our first night.

Day 2: Today we will be looking for butterflies around the breathtaking Rila Monastery in the 'Rila Monastery' Prime Butterfly Area which, as its name suggests, is located. Species we will be looking out for include: Tufted Marbled Skipper, Dusky Grizzled Skipper, Balkan Clouded Yellow, Geranium Argus, Scarce Copper, Sooty Copper, Map Butterfly, Ilex Hairstreak, Eastern Short-tailed Blue, Silver-washed Fritillary, High Brown Fritillary, Queen of Spain Fritillary, Spotted Fritillary, Knapweed Fritillary, Weaver's Fritillary, Eastern Large Heath, Ottoman Brassy Ringlet, Bright-eyed Ringlet, Great Sooty Satyr, and if we are lucky Purple Emperor and Poplar Admiral. Later in the day we then transfer to Bansko where we will be based for the next two nights.

Day 3: We spend today in the 'Pirin' Prime Butterfly Area. Species we will be looking out for include: Olive Skipper, Apollo, Clouded Apollo, Southern Small White, Balkan Copper, Large Blue, Idas Blue, Mazarine Blue, Turquoise Blue, False Eros Blue, Dusky Meadow Brown, Bulgarian Ringlet, Nicholl's Ringlet, Common Brassy Ringlet, Bright-eyed Ringlet, Ottoman Brassy Ringlet, Eastern Large Heath, Cynthia's Fritillary, Spotted Fritillary, Niobe Fritillary, and Balkan Fritillary.

Day 4: Leaving Bansko we travel south down the Struma valley, where we will explore the 'Kresna' Prime Butterfly Area. Some of the species we hope to see include: Oberthur's Grizzled Skipper, Scarce Swallowtail, Southern Small White, Krueper's Small White, Eastern Bath White, Puprle-shot Copper, Lesser Fiery Copper, Little Tiger Blue, Green-underside Blue, Iolas Blue, Turquoise Blue, Anomalous Blue, Oriental Meadow Brown, Balkan Marbled White, Eastern Rock Grayling, Balkan Grayling, Freyer's Grayling, Great Banded Grayling, The Hermit, Southern White Admiral, Common Glider, and Southern Comma. We then make our way on to the beautiful town of Melnik, an architectural reserve where we will be based for the next two nights.

Day 5: Today we spend a full day exploring the 'Melnik' Prime Butterfly Area, a region of spectacular sandstone ridges and gorges which lies around Melnik, the smallest and most picturesque town in Bulgaria. Species we will be looking out for today include: Lulworth Skipper, Oriental Marbled Skipper, Orbed Red-underwing Skipper, Yellow-banded Skipper, Swallowtail, Eastern Wood White, Berger's Clouded Yellow, Eastern Dappled White, Southern Small White, Eastern Bath White, Purple-shot Copper, Sloe Hairstreak, White-letter Hairstreak, Osiris Blue, Eastern Short-tailed Blue, Eastern Baton Blue, Green-underside Blue, Idas Blue, Revardin's Blue, Chapman's Blue, Amanda's Blue, Lattice Brown, Balkan Marbled White, Eastern Rock Grayling, Balkan Grayling, Tree Grayling, False Grayling, Freyer's Purple Emperor, Southern White Admiral, and Map Butterfly. During the day there will also be an opportunity to visit the atmospheric Rozhen Monastery.

Day 6: Leaving Melnik we set east, crossing the southern part of the Pirin Mountains through a region designated as the 'Kalimantsi' Prime Butterfly Area. Possible species occurring in this region are: Oriental Marbled Skipper, Tessellated Skipper, Mountain Small White, Short-tailed Blue, Eastern Baton Blue, Green-underside Blue, Large Blue, Zephyr Blue, Anomalous Blue, Woodland Ringlet, Balkan Grayling and Lesser Spotted Fritillary. Later in then day, we then head on into Mesta Valley and explore western periphery of the 'Western Rodopi' Prime Butterfly Area. Here we will be looking out for species such as Marbled Skipper, Orbed Red-underwing Skipper, Yellow-banded Skipper, Scarce Swallowtail, Black Hairstreak, Lang's Short-tailed Blue, Mazarine Blue, Large Wall Brown, Dusky meadow Brown, Grayling, False Grayling, Freyer's Purple Emperor, Glanville Fritillary, Nickerl's Fritillary, Niobe Fritillary and Marbled Fritillary. Finally we arrive in a village at the south-eastern foot of the Rila Mountains where we will spend the night.

Day 7: We spend today exploring the 'Rila' Prime Butterfly Area. Species we will be looking out for today include: Yellow-banded Skipper, Dusky Grizzled Skipper, Balkan Clouded Yellow, Eastern Bath White, Puprle-shot Copper, Mazarine Blue, Eastern Large Heath, Arran Brown, Large Ringlet, Bulgarian Ringlet, Nicholl's Ringlet, Ottoman Brassy Ringlet, Water Ringlet, Bright-eyed Ringlet, Dewy Ringlet, Cynthia's Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Balkan Fritillary, and Shepherd's Fritillary. Our final night will be spent at the north-eastern foot of the Rila Mountains.

Day 8: Leaving the Rila Mountains we make our way back to Sofia where the tour ends.
